Instagram Image Sizes
Current dimensions and aspect ratios for Instagram feed posts, carousels, Stories, Reels, covers, profile images, and grid previews.
For a tall Instagram feed photo, use 1080 × 1440 px at 3:4. The familiar 1080 × 1350 px 4:5 format is still supported, while square posts use 1080 × 1080 px. For full-screen Stories and Reels, use a 1080 × 1920 px 9:16 working canvas. Keep important text and subjects away from interface-heavy edges because previews and UI overlays can crop or cover parts of the original frame.
Instagram Sizes at a Glance
These dimensions are practical working sizes for creating Instagram content. Feed-photo ratios are based on Instagram's current supported range, while full-screen formats use a 9:16 production canvas.
| Format | Working Size | Ratio | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Feed Portrait | 1080 × 1440 px | 3:4 | Tall native photo format; also aligns well with the current profile-grid shape. |
| Feed Portrait | 1080 × 1350 px | 4:5 | Established portrait format still widely used for feed graphics and photos. |
| Feed Square | 1080 × 1080 px | 1:1 | Classic square post. |
| Feed Landscape | 1080 × 566 px | 1.91:1 | Wide end of Instagram's supported feed-photo range. |
| Carousel | 1080 × 1440 px | 3:4 | Tall carousel format; use the same frame for designed slides. |
| Carousel | 1080 × 1350 px | 4:5 | Common portrait carousel working format. |
| Story | 1080 × 1920 px | 9:16 | Full-screen vertical Story canvas. |
| Reel | 1080 × 1920 px | 9:16 | Full-screen vertical Reel working canvas. |
| Reel Cover | 420 × 654 px | ≈ 1:1.56 | Instagram's documented recommended cover-photo size. |
| Profile Picture | 320 × 320 px+ | 1:1 | Common square working baseline; displayed as a circular crop. |
| Profile Grid | Preview Crop | 3:4 | Profile-grid preview; not a separate upload format. |
A working size is a convenient export canvas that matches a supported aspect ratio. Instagram can resize and recompress uploaded media, so these dimensions should not be interpreted as the only files the platform accepts.
Instagram Feed Post Sizes
Instagram currently supports feed photos from approximately 1.91:1 landscape through 3:4 portrait. At a working width of 1080 pixels, that corresponds to heights from roughly 566 to 1440 pixels.
Tall portrait format supported natively by Instagram and well matched to the current profile-grid shape.
The long-established Instagram portrait format. Still useful for existing templates and cross-platform social graphics.
Classic square format with predictable composition and broad reuse across social platforms.
Wide landscape format useful for panoramic or horizontal material, but it occupies less vertical feed space.
Instagram added native 3:4 photo support in 2025 for both single-photo posts and carousels. A phone-camera photo captured at 3:4 can therefore be presented without first forcing it into the older 4:5 frame.
For a new photo-first template, 1080 × 1440 at 3:4 is a useful default because it uses the taller supported photo frame and closely matches the current profile-grid shape. Keep 1080 × 1350 templates when 4:5 better fits your artwork or workflow.
Instagram Aspect Ratios
The diagrams below compare the relative shapes of the most useful Instagram production formats.
Native tall feed-photo format and a strong match for the current profile grid.
Familiar Instagram portrait format used by many existing post and carousel templates.
Classic square frame, still fully usable for feed posts and carousels.
Wide feed-photo format for horizontal artwork and photography.
Full-screen vertical canvas used for Stories and Reels.
Feed templates are easy to remember at 1080 pixels wide. Change the height to produce the desired aspect ratio: 1440 for 3:4, 1350 for 4:5, 1080 for square, or about 566 for 1.91:1 landscape.
Instagram Carousel Sizes
Instagram's native 3:4 photo support also applies to carousels. For a designed carousel, the most predictable approach is to build every slide at the same dimensions and aspect ratio.
| Carousel Format | Size | Ratio | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tall Portrait | 1080 × 1440 px | 3:4 | Tall slides, photography, tutorials, and grid-aware covers. |
| Portrait | 1080 × 1350 px | 4:5 | Existing carousel templates, infographics, and text-heavy slides. |
| Square | 1080 × 1080 px | 1:1 | Simple reusable square social graphics. |
| Landscape | 1080 × 566 px | 1.91:1 | Wide screenshots, panoramas, and horizontal imagery. |
Instagram can offer mixed or original image handling in some carousel composer flows, but a designed carousel is easier to control when every slide has the same canvas size. This prevents unexpected framing changes between slides.
Treat slide one as both the carousel's opening frame and a profile-grid preview. Keep the title and important subject matter near the center so the post remains readable when preview crops differ from the full feed frame.
Instagram Story Size
The practical full-screen Instagram Story canvas is 1080 × 1920 pixels at a 9:16 aspect ratio. This matches the vertical shape of a modern phone screen and gives you the most predictable full-screen layout.
Common full-resolution Story working width.
Full-screen 9:16 working height.
Standard full-screen vertical orientation.
Keep text, logos, and important subjects away from areas likely to be covered by interface elements.
Usernames, reply controls, captions, stickers, and other interface elements can overlap the top and bottom of a Story. Avoid treating the entire 1080 × 1920 frame as an equally safe text area.
Highlight Covers
Highlight artwork can be prepared on the same vertical Story canvas, but the visible Highlight icon is shown as a much smaller circular crop. Keep the actual icon or symbol centered with generous empty space around it.
Instagram Reel Size
Build full-screen Reels on a 9:16 vertical canvas. A practical production size is 1080 × 1920 pixels. Instagram's Reel documentation allows ratios up to 9:16 and specifies minimum technical requirements for uploaded video.
| Element | Size / Requirement | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Reel Canvas | 1080 × 1920 px | Practical full-screen 9:16 production size. |
| Aspect Ratio | 9:16 | Full-screen vertical presentation. |
| Minimum Resolution | 720 px | Instagram's documented Reel minimum resolution. |
| Frame Rate | 30 FPS minimum | Instagram's documented minimum Reel frame rate. |
| Cover Photo | 420 × 654 px | Instagram's documented recommended cover-photo size. |
Even though Instagram documents a 420 × 654 cover recommendation, it is often easier to create cover artwork on your full 1080 × 1920 Reel canvas and keep the title and subject centered. That gives you more flexibility when the cover is cropped for different previews.
Captions, account information, audio, engagement buttons, and other controls occupy parts of the Reel interface. Do not place important text against the bottom or extreme side edges just because those pixels exist in the export.
Profile Picture & Grid
Instagram's profile presentation is a separate design consideration from the full feed post. A post can look correct in the feed while appearing cropped differently in the profile grid.
The current profile grid uses portrait-shaped previews rather than the old square-only grid.
A common square baseline for profile artwork. A larger square source can also be used.
Profile images are displayed circularly, so corners should not contain essential details.
Center logos, faces, and important text so the design survives both circular and rectangular crops.
A 1080 × 1440 feed image has the same 3:4 shape used by the current profile-grid preview, reducing the amount of reframing required between the full post and its grid tile.
Square, 4:5, landscape, and vertical video content can still appear normally in its primary placement while receiving a different crop when Instagram generates a profile-grid preview.
Exporting Instagram Images
Correct pixel dimensions are only part of the workflow. Instagram can resize, compress, crop, and overlay interface elements depending on where the media appears.
| Check | Recommendation | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Feed width | 1080 px working width | Matches a practical high-quality Instagram feed workflow. |
| Portrait template | 3:4 or 4:5 | Both are supported; choose based on your composition and template system. |
| Stories / Reels | 1080 × 1920 | Gives you a full 9:16 vertical canvas. |
| Color space | sRGB | Safest general-purpose color space for web and social media output. |
| Photos | High-quality JPEG | Efficient for photographic images and gradients. |
| Graphics | PNG or high-quality JPEG | Choose based on text, transparency, artwork, and file size. |
| Text placement | Keep toward center | Helps survive UI overlays and preview crops. |
| Carousel slides | Use one canvas size | Creates a predictable, consistent sequence. |
A Simple Three-Template System
3:4 master for portrait feed posts and carousels.
Reusable square master when cross-platform compatibility matters more than height.
9:16 master for Stories, Reels, and vertical cover artwork.
Instagram's interface changes across placements, devices, captions, and app updates. Treat safe zones as a composition strategy rather than assuming one fixed pixel margin will remain correct forever. Keep essential information away from extreme edges.
Review both the full post and its profile preview whenever possible. This is especially important for text-heavy graphics, carousel covers, Reel covers, and artwork with subjects positioned near the frame edges.
Instagram Size Questions
What size should an Instagram post be in 2026?
For a tall portrait feed image, 1080 × 1440 pixels at 3:4 is a strong current working size. Instagram also supports the familiar 1080 × 1350 at 4:5, 1080 × 1080 square, and wider landscape formats.
Does Instagram support 3:4 photos?
Yes. Instagram added native 3:4 photo support for both single-photo posts and carousels. At a working width of 1080 pixels, a 3:4 image is 1080 × 1440 pixels.
Is 1080 × 1350 still good for Instagram?
Yes. 1080 × 1350 is a 4:5 portrait image and remains supported. It is still widely used for graphics, templates, and carousels even though Instagram now also supports the taller 3:4 format.
What size should Instagram Stories be?
Use a practical working size of 1080 × 1920 pixels at a 9:16 aspect ratio for a full-screen Story.
What size should Instagram Reels be?
A full-screen Reel should be designed on a 9:16 vertical canvas. A common production size is 1080 × 1920 pixels.
What size should an Instagram Reel cover be?
Instagram documents a recommended Reel cover-photo size of 420 × 654 pixels. For design work, you can also build the artwork on a larger 1080 × 1920 master and keep important content centered so it survives preview crops.
Why does my post crop differently on my profile?
The profile grid uses a portrait preview rather than simply displaying every upload at its original shape. Square, 4:5, landscape, and Reel artwork can therefore receive a different crop when shown on the grid.
Can Instagram carousel slides use different sizes?
Instagram can offer mixed or original image handling in some composer flows, but a designed carousel is more predictable when every slide uses the same dimensions and aspect ratio.
What size should an Instagram profile picture be?
Use a square image and keep the important content centered because Instagram displays profile pictures as circles. 320 × 320 pixels is a common working baseline, although a larger square source can also be used.
